Summer Fun and Preventing Learning Loss
Students often risk academic skill loss during periods when school is not in session, including summer break when they are out of the classroom environment for two months. Providing them with ongoing opportunities to retain reading and math skills, and building on those skills, is essential for a return to a new school year in late August, ready to continue learning and growing. Some students lack adequate access to reading materials and games to help retain and build reading and math skills at home. They can be socially isolated from community resources when living in rural areas of the county if parents/guardians do not have reliable transportation to get their children to a library, or have the financial means to purchase items for use in the home. In May 2026, the CIS program at Cedar Grove Middle School was able to purchase books and educational games for case-managed students for the summer break to help address summer learning loss.
When CIS Success Coach Mrs. Kaci learned that there was funding to encourage and support students through their literacy education journey, she knew just the books and types of games the students would be interested in. The impact of this financial contribution on the CIS program meant more than words could explain. The students’ eyes lit up when they saw new, intriguing, and relatable book titles spread out on the table for them to select, as well as fun games that build academic skills and promote healthy family interaction.
Reading is such an important skill and serves as a building block for higher education. Without financial contributions, CIS could not provide these educational, and sometimes life altering, opportunities for students. CIS is so grateful for everyone who has ever given to CIS and considers giving to CIS in the future. Together, we help students to succeed in school and in life!
The Cedar Grove students had so much fun posing with their new books! The book “photoshoot” was filled with joy, laughter and belonging, and that is a small moment that will stay with them and bring a smile to their faces long after receiving the books and games. The importance of students knowing that there is not only a caring program but a caring community that believes in them, wants the best for them, and is willing to help them achieve success, is something that is invaluable!
