Grant Received from Ocean Ridge Charities Association

Communities In Schools is the grateful recipient of a grant award from ORCA (Ocean Ridge Charities Association) to support our Action for Success Program. The grant will fund activities connected with our Attendance initiative, providing recognition events for students and their families for those students who have achieved or made significant progress toward meeting their attendance goals. it will also provide tools and resources needed to implement our Attendance initiative with student  participants.

Being present at school each day is critical for students’ learning. Students who miss even a few days each semester can fall behind their peers and become frustrated with learning. Once they realize they are falling behind they can lose confidence and have increased absences as they feel uncomfortable in the classroom knowing they cannot keep pace with classroom instruction. We work with students to remove barriers to regular school attendance, which can include not keeping pace with peers academically in the classroom, lack of basic need items in the home, lack of reliable transportation, illness, relationship issues with peers, or a host of other factors. CIS identifies barriers, set goals for the student to reduce the number of absent days, and provides incentives for regular school attendance. We also provide additional supports as needed through the provision of academic tutoring, mentoring, club and lunch group activities to build positive peer connections, social skill groups, and other resources and interventions to help students be successful.  Funding through ORCA ensures we will have the breadth of resources to implement our Attendance initiative and get truant students back on a positive path!

ORCA is a 501c3 non-profit corporation within the Ocean Ridge Plantation community in Ocean Isle Beach. It is comprised of residents dedicated to identifying and supporting Brunswick County charities and non-profits that assist disadvantaged citizens in our area. They work to build partnerships, fundraise, and expand volunteer participation to benefit Brunswick County. They have been valued supporters of our work for many years and we appreciate the funding received again this year to support our work!
