International Paper Foundation: Supporting Summer Reading for Students

Thanks to the International Paper Foundation, CIS is able to provide independent reading materials to students prior to Winter, Spring, and Summer breaks each school year due to a generous grant award made to our organization.

Waccamaw School CIS Success Coach, Corri Proctor, recently distributed summer reading books to her students. These books are selected by each student based on topics of personal interest and their reading level. The books are theirs to keep to start building a home library and to read during the summer break to help prevent reading skill loss and instill a love of reading as a positive leisure time activity.
We hope the students have a safe, happy summer and enjoy reading these wonderful books!

The International Paper Foundation has generously supported Communities In Schools of Brunswick County for many years, providing needed grant funding to purchase independent reading books for students to use at home. Many students in Brunswick County do not live within walking distance of a library and many others do not have transportation to get to the library nearest to them to access books. This leaves students at risk of learning loss during school breaks when they lack reading materials to help maintain and continue growing reading skills. These books provide them with quality reading materials that they can keep to read and that they can even share with other students and siblings when school is not in session. Reading is a fundamental skill that is an essential foundation to all other learning. When we promote reading, we promote student success!
