St James Service Club Funds Summer Fun for Elementary Students

A grant award from the St James Service Club in Southport is funding mini summer camp sessions for students from Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary, Waccamaw School, Virginia Williamson Elementary, and Bolivia Elementary schools this summer. Gatherings have been planned by our Success Coaches and are held at area parks. Activities include STEM hands -on projects such as making volcanos and slime, arts and crafts, nature walks, playground time, check in time with students’ Success Coaches, breakfast and lunch, and items to take home for the students to continue learning with their families.  The goal is to serve 80 students and so far registration has exceeded that goal. Despite the hot summer weather, students are finding the mini camps provide cool summertime activities and valuable opportunities to connect with peers during summer recess.

Students often suffer from learning loss during the summer months when school is not in session. By providing opportunities during the summer for continued learning, exploration, and peer connections is vital for skill retention and continued relationship building.  CIS is grateful for the St James Service Club grant to support the provision of summer camp experiences to local students this summer! The mini camps are being offered six times during the month of June.
