St James Service Club Funds Summer Fun!
For the second year in a row, the St James Service Club of St James Plantation in Southport, has provided grant funding for CIS to host a two week series of mini summer camp experiences for students who attend Jessie Mae Monroe, Bolivia, Virginia Williamson, and Supply Elementary schools and who are participate during the school year in our CIS Action for Success Program. The mini camps provide the opportunity for students to continue learning and growing while school is not in session while having fun in the process. It affords students time to stay connected with peers, forge new friendships, spend time enjoying positive activities with family and friends, and gives our Success Coaches who work throughout the school year with the students to have time over the summer to maintain those connections.
The camps were divided between two locations to help make them accessible for students and their families. One series of camp sessions was held at Shallotte District Park for students from Jessie Mae Monroe and Supply Elementary schools, and the other was held at Town Creek Park for students from Bolivia and Virginia Williamson elementary schools. Each session was held outside with shade available from the picnic pavilions. Plenty of cold drinks were provided so students could stay hydrated in the hot summer temperatures, and lunch was provided daily. Students engaged in a variety of activities, including tie dying, STEM projects, crafts, relay games, face painting and temporary tattooing, playing in a ball ;it, and more. Each participant also received a goodie bag with summer reading books and educational games to use at home with family and friends throughout the summer.
Students and their parents/guardians reported having a great time and appreciating the cost-free camp experiences. Keeping students focused on healthy activities during out-of-school time is critical to their safety and continued physical, emotional, and academic growth. With the support of the St James Service Club, CIS was thrilled to be able to help ;provide some fun and continued learning this summer for local students. We thank our volunteers and our Success Coaches who planned and hosted these mini camps for their students as we continue working to be #AllinforKids year round!
