Building Positive Relationships to Reduce Truancy and Foster Academic Success!
At Waccamaw School, 2nd grader Ben Pickett’s success is an example of perseverance, growth, and the power of community support. Last school year, Ben was referred to the CIS program for his attendance and academics. With 25 absences and 46 tardies, his grades began to slip. But through the dedication of the Communities In Schools’ Action for Success Program at Waccamaw School and the support of those around him, Ben’s learning situation has improved significantly.
This year, thanks to his commitment, the support of our volunteer tutors and Success Coach, Corri Proctor, along with funding through a Rural Communities Grant from Communities In Schools which focuses on improving student attendance, Ben has made extraordinary progress. His absences have dropped from 25 to just 4, and his tardies from 46 to 6. Ben shared with Miss Corri how proud he is to come to school every day, and his enthusiasm is contagious. Each morning, he is motivated by the possibility of earning attendance incentives, and this sense of purpose is fueling his continued growth.
What’s even more inspiring is how this attendance improvement is translating into academic success. Ben is now receiving the consistent instruction he needs to thrive in the classroom. His weekly tutoring sessions with Mr. Kirchner, a dedicated member of the Kiwanis Club and CIS volunteer, have been a game-changer. They focus on foundational Reading and Math skills, giving Ben the tools he needs to succeed, and he’s thriving. He’s excited about practicing his spelling words and completing his reading log, and his absolute favorite part is working with Mr. Kirchner to put his spelling words in ABC order.
Attendance plays such a crucial role in a child’s academic success, and Ben’s progress shows just how powerful the right support system can be. When students like Ben have access to the resources they need—whether it’s individualized tutoring, regular check-ins, or community encouragement—they can overcome challenges and achieve things they never thought possible.
This story is a reminder of what we can achieve when we work together. Ben’s success is a reflection of the dedication of school and CIS staff, the support of community partners like Mr. Kirchner, and the perseverance of a young student who is determined to succeed.
Keep up the good work Ben! You have a bright future ahead of you!
