Game Changers Boys Mentoring Group – South Brunswick Middle School
Game Changers is a club offered to boys attending South Brunswick Middle School in Southport that provides mentoring, career exploration, and life skill development. The club is led by CIS Success Coach Bryan Mills and Brunswick County Sheriff’s Deputy Willie McRae. A generous grant award was recently received from St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southport to support club activities. The $700 grant was used as follows:
Logo shirts were provided to all boys in the Game Changers Club to help foster a sense of unity and visibility within the South Brunswick Middle School community. The boys selected the shirt logo themselves and take great pride in wearing these shirts on club meeting days.
As part of Black History Month, Game Changers Club students were asked to identify a person that they admired. They were then able to tour the Brunswick County Government Center and meet and speak with Juvenile Court Judge Pauline Hankins as they celebrated Black History Month. While there they were able to see the workings of the Judicial Branch of government. They also had an opportunity to tour the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Department where they learned about careers in law enforcement and the processes and procedures followed by sheriff’s deputies and other staff as they work to maintain law and order in the community and support the needs of local citizens and visitors alike. Lunch was provided to the boys using a portion of the grant funding.
The remaining grant funding was utilized to purchase neckties and journals for the boys to support the club’s ongoing activities of personal reflection and goal setting and preparing the boys for interviews and conduct in more formal settings.

Communities In Schools thanks St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church for providing funding to support the activities of the Game Changers Club. The club has had a positive impact on the boys it serves and continues to help prepare them for future careers and post- secondary educational opportunities.
