Mentoring Groups Begin at Cedar Grove Middle School
At Cedar Grove Middle School, CIS volunteer Mr. Scott has started up his boys mentoring group for this school year. They did introductions and completed a group form that identified their strengths, what makes them a team player, and their goals and focus areas for this year. Most of the boys said their strength lies in athletics and that they are a team player because they work hard and encourage others. Their goals varied from making the basketball team to passing 7th grade, but all of them said a major focus for this year is to stay out of trouble. These are all great goals to set for the new school year!
Taylor Watkins, Middle School Program Director, shared that Mr. Scott has been her most consistent and reliable volunteer in the CIS program at Cedar Grove and she is thankful to have him return this year!
Mentoring groups and one-on-one mentoring opportunities are provided to students at each of the eleven schools served by Communities In Schools. They provide students with the time to connect with positive adult role models from their community who do everything from providing a listening ear, to helping them complete group service projects for their school community, to helping them navigate how to form positive peer groups, to learning how to interact respectfully with others, and supporting the development of good character skills. For students who lack good support and adult role models outside of school, this is critical to their development into responsible citizens and members of their school community.
