Relationships Matter
What is a “Velcro kid”? One would describe them as a highly attached child. That is Erazia, a 6th grade student at Shallotte Middle School. She is the student who happily sits with her Success Coach, Ms. Ebony, at the front of the school to greet the other kids, the one who visits Ms. Ebony during her bathroom breaks, and playfully tells Ms. Ebony that she is not allowed to take summer vacation without her.
While she is always by her Success Coach’s side, building that close bond has had incredible advantages. She knew that she could come to Ms. Ebony whether she was upset, or just needed a quiet place to complete her work. Erazia thrived when she and her Success Coach spent time together working on Math in a quiet setting; that one-on-one attention was exactly what she needed to truly excel. Because she always gives her absolute best, Erazia achieved her goals this year and was recognized for her outstanding achievements in Math.
The relationship is at the core of every student success story. CIS Success Coaches work to build trust and display genuine caring and commitment to the success and well-being of their students. It can take time to build a mutually respectful relationship between a Success Coach and a student, especially if the student is dealing with personal trauma. Our Success Coaches remain steadfast in fulfilling our mission “to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life”, and it is being achieved with students like Erazia and over 500 others each school year here in Brunswick County. CIS is so proud of Erazia and all the other students who partner with us to walk with them on their path to academic and personal success!
